Doors Open Ontario is a province-wide celebration of community heritage designed to create access, awareness and excitement about our heritage. Doors Open provides residents and visitors alike with a unique opportunity to explore and enjoy sometimes hidden and always interesting places within our community - all free of charge.

The City of Owen Sound participated in Doors Open for the first time in 2003. With sponsorship assistance from community-minded businesses, 20 sites in and around Owen Sound opened their doors on June 14 and 15, 2003. As a first-year event, Doors Open Owen Sound was a resounding success drawing close to 4,500 visits through its doors and sites.

Owen Sound will once again be hosting Doors Open on June 2 and 3, 2012. Many exciting events are planned.

“Art in the Garden” returns this year at Highland Manor Inn Grand Victorian Bed & Breakfast, highlighting works of various local artists.

Visit Inglis Falls with its spectacular 18-metre high cascade.

From gardens to gables, museums to mansions, Doors Open Owen Sound provides everyone with an opportunity to enjoy the sites of cultural, historical, environmental or architectural significance in and around the City.

Beth Ezekiel Synagogue

Beth Ezekiel Synagogue
Year Built: 1903
First occupied by the Calvary Church, this building has been home to the Synagogue since 1946. Named for Ezekiel Cadesky, a Russian immigrant who settled here in the early 1900s, the structure draws from the tradition of simple, turn-of-the-century Georgian meeting halls. Recently added intricate stained glass windows tell the story of many member families. Designated under the Ontario Heritage Act in 1990.

Butchart Heritage Home Bed & Breakfast
Year Built: 1891
Built in the Queen Anne Revival style, the building has a steeply sloped hip roof and off-set tower with rare curved- glass windows that add elegance despite their simplicity. The semi-elliptical fanlite set above a wider door is the hallmark of North American Neo-Classicism. Designated under the Ontario Heritage Act in 2009.

Central Westside United Church

Central Westside United Church
Year Built: 1910
Built originally as Westside Methodist Church at a cost of $28,000, the building remains much the same as it was a century ago. Built with Renaissance proportions in the Akron Style and constructed of local period materials, since original construction, a verandah has been added to the north eastern entrance, and a wheelchair ramp constructed onto the westerly entrance. The original pipe organ dates from 1910. Designated under the Ontario Heritage Act in 1985.

Former Christian Science Society/Congregational Church

Former Christian Science Society/Congregational Church
Year Built: 1871
Built of native stone cut on site in 1871 as a Congregational Church, this is thought to be the oldest existing church building in the City. In 1882 the church was sold to the Women’s Christian Temperance Union as a meeting hall. The Lutheran Church bought it in 1943, and in 1963 it was purchased by the Christian Science Society. It was sold to private interests in 2006. Designated under the Ontario Heritage Act in 1979.

Year Built: 2008
Described as an “IMAX theatre on steroids”, the Great Lakes International Marine Training Centre, at the Owen Sound campus of Georgian College, features the most advanced marine training simulators in the country. Visitors will receive semi-guided tours of the $8.5 million facility, which includes a Class ‘A’ Simulator that displays 360 degree images of nearly any port in the world.

Greenwood Cemetery & Mausoleum

Greenwood Cemetery & Mausoleum
Year Built: 1927
Greenwood Cemetery, surrounded by tall stately maples and cedar hedges, is situated atop a wooded ravine at the City’s south west corner. The site contains a residence, one of the oldest homes in the City, now used as the office. A Mausoleum built in 1927 is clad in Indiana Limestone with Italian marble interior and impressive stained glass windows. Only cemetery in Canada to contain 3 Victoria Cross recipients.

Highland Manor Inn Bed & Breakfast

Highland Manor Inn Bed & Breakfast
Year Built: 1875
Originally known as the Fleming House, the 7,500 sq. ft Highland Manor Inn, now a bed & breakfast, is one of the finest examples of High Victorian architecture in Canada. The builders strove to establish a feeling of grandeur through the use of Roman arches, a striking façade and windows, and non-matching dormers of varying sizes that grace the almost 50 foot-high structure. Art in the Garden features paintings, jewellery, fiber art, woodwork, metal sculpture, masks and more.

Inglis Falls

Year Built: 1862
Situated on the outskirts of Owen Sound in the heart of Inglis Falls Conservation Area, the Sydenham River cascades 18 metres over the edge of the Niagara Escarpment. See remains of former water flume, grinding stones and stone building, part of a grist, saw and woollen mill complex. Take advantage of the opportunity to view the Inglis Falls Filtration Plant, part of Trails Open. These unique underground caverns were built in 1910. All the water was filtered here and then gravity fed into the valley for the residents to use in their homes. The filtration beds were decommissioned in 1969. Meet us at the pavilion for your guided tour.

MacLean Estate Bed & Breakfast

Year Built: 1901
Originally owned by one of Owen Sound's 'turn of the century' physicians, Dr. J.A. Hershey & Family. Dr. Hershey lived in part of this 3,200 sq. ft. home, and had his practice out of the other half for the first 20 years of the 1900s. The the MacLean Estate B&B opened in spring of 2012. Original oak floors and trim, leaded glass windows and pocket doors on the inside and a turret are Victorian age features.

McQuay Tannery Seniors' Centre

McQuay Tannery Seniors' Centre
Year Built: 1946
This small, unobtrusive building is all that remains of one of Owen Sound’s major industrial concerns of the first half of the 20th century. The McQuay Tanning Co. Ltd. produced fine grade leather and harness which were shipped across Canada from Quebec to Vancouver and internationally. Today it is a Seniors Centre.

Morland Place

Morland Place
Year Built: 1920
The south part of this home was built by the McCallum family in 1920, originally a small country cottage-style home. The north front is a Regency Georgian Villa design—typical of the late 1860s and 1870s High Victorian era. The gardens with concrete statues and benches are of a European “architectural” style.

Year Built: 1922
In 1922 the Division Street Church congregation built Northcliffe Mission to serve the poorest neighbourhood in Owen Sound, an area known as Mudtown. After the Mission dissolved, it was used for civic purposes until the Boy Scouts assumed ownership. The building is now home to Kate McLaren's Mudtown Pottery, hosting pottery classes, a shop and an exhibition and performance hall.

Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library
Year Built: 1914
Library service was founded in Owen Sound in 1855, originally as a Mechanics’ Institute. The Carnegie Public Library was completed in 1914 with a grant from the Carnegie Foundation and was thoughtfully restored in 2003. An addition was built in 1972. This full service library meets the needs of the City as well as surrounding municipalities. Designated under the Ontario Heritage Act in 2009.

Owen Sound Masonic Lodge

Owen Sound Masonic Lodge
Year Built: 1920
St. George’s Lodge No. 88 was formed in 1857 with its first permanent quarters on what is now 3rd Avenue East. In 1877, the brethren took new lodge rooms on 2nd Avenue East and remained there for 103 years. In 1980, the Lodge moved to its present location, built circa 1920 as a place of worship.

Year Built: 2011
This new 77,364-square foot building on the west side of the inner harbour was completed in the fall of 2011. It’s the new home of the Owen Sound Family Health Team, which consolidated all of its medical services here under one roof in November 2011. The Team serves approximately 30,000 patients.

Rogers TV

Year Built: 1991
Community television has been a part of Grey County’s fabric since 1963. MacLean Hunter Cable TV (now Rogers TV) acquired this market from Huron Cable; Rogers took over in 2004. This building was built by MacLean Hunter in 1991, who moved operations here from downtown Owen Sound. Rogers TV places a strong emphasis on providing local programming that matters to the community it serves and has increased Grey County programming since 2004.

Tom Thomson Art Gallery

Tom Thomson Art Gallery
Year Built: 1988
This Gallery houses a nationally significant collection of Thomson’s works and is the only gallery designated as a Thomson memorial. Thomson, who grew up near Owen Sound, and the Group of Seven had a distinctive approach to portraying Canadian landscape in the early 20th century. Visit the gallery and celebrate Thomson’s legacy.

Harrison Park Trail System

Harrison Park Trail System
Year Built: 1912
This elaborate collection of trails, located within the largest park in the City of Owen Sound, includes: Fitness Trail (1.2 km), Mile Drive (.8 km), Freedom Trail (600 m), Weaver's Creek Trail/Boardwalk (150 m) and a number of small secondary trails. This trail network includes some fully accessible routes.
