Days of Significance and Being Inclusive
Days and months of significance are a way to raise awareness and action about historical, cultural, and equitable practices that will help create a more inclusive and welcoming community. Over the past few years, days of significance are increasingly being shared across social media platforms as a way for organizations to connect with their communities and share their values and priorities – which aligns with the City of Owen Sound's value of “Caring,” as well as the City's Inclusion Strategy.
The following list is a resource for the City of Owen Sound community and has been sourced from current and previous events as well as activities within the community, as well as provincial and federal government important and commemorative events.
We invite you to explore these days of significance that raise awareness about creating a more equitable, inclusive, and just community. Learning the history of, and developing an understanding of, the different cultures and diversity of our community, helps us become aware, rethink our assumptions, create allyship, and foster a sense of connection and inclusion with each other.
This is a living resource, and members of the community are welcome to reach out with additions and updates, or to let us know about any errors. To send an inquiry about the calendar, please email communications@owensound.ca
Important to Note – There are many days associated with various faiths, and the absence of such dates on this list should not be interpreted to mean they are not significant or valued. This list is not meant to be comprehensive or exhaustive, and every attempt has been made to ensure its accuracy. This is a fluid list, and updates and changes will be made throughout the year.
