Passing of Former City Councillor and Community Champion, Jan Chamberlain
The City of Owen Sound is saddened to share the passing of former Councillor Jan Chamberlain, a passionate and dedicated community leader.
Jan served on Owen Sound City Council from 2010 to 2014, and her commitment to the community extended far beyond her time in office. She was a dedicated member of several key committees, including those focused on housing, healthcare, tourism, and community development. Jan also played an instrumental role in milestone celebrations such as the City’s Homecoming in 1987 and again in 2007.
Named Volunteer of the Year in 2008 and Senior of the Year in 2021, Jan’s decades of service reflected her deep love for Owen Sound. She had a gift for bringing people together and building lasting community support for the causes she cared about. Earlier this year, Jan received the King Charles III Coronation Medal for her significant, lifelong community service contributions.
Jan’s devotion to our city inspires us all. Her focus on getting things done in service of making Owen Sound where you want to live will continue through all the lives she touched along the way.
Jan leaves behind a legacy of leadership, kindness, and connection. She will be deeply missed. Long-time friends of Jan are planning a celebration of life event, open to the public, on August 18, at the Bayshore Community Centre beginning at 11:00AM.
Flags at city facilities will be lowered to half-mast in Jan's honour beginning Monday, August 18, to coincide with the public celebration of life.
