Road Construction on 9th Avenue E and 6th Street E Down to One Lane

The City of Owen Sound is notifying motorists of a change in traffic signals at the intersection of 9th Avenue East and 6th Street East. 

Traffic will be reduced to one lane on Tuesday, August 5 and Wednesday, August 6, with flaggers on site to direct traffic. This is part of the large 9th Avenue East infrastructure project underway in the area. The scope of work includes underground pipe network replacement, sidewalk expansion, and road resurfacing.  

The City of Owen Sound reminds motorists of the full closure of 6th Street East between 8th Avenue East and 9th Avenue East, with the following detours currently in effect: 

• Detour 1- (6th Street E- Eastbound) Eastbound traffic on 6th Street East will be detoured northward on 7th Avenue East and east on 10th Street East. 

• Detour 2- (6th Street E- Westbound) Westbound traffic on 8th Street East will continue westbound on 8th Street East and then south on 3rd Avenue East. 

• Detour 3- (6th Street E- Westbound) Westbound traffic on 10th Street East will continue westbound on 10th Street East and then south 3rd Avenue East  

These detours have been set up to alleviate congestion and distribute heavy truck traffic amongst the detour options. 

Due to the location and scope of the project, the construction will significantly impact daily commuters, local residents, and tourists. Plan to expect delays if driving through this area, as 9th Avenue East will be reduced, with one lane moving in each direction. Pedestrian access will remain in place, so use caution when walking through this area.  

The Crosstown bus route will be redirected at 6th Street East and 8th Avenue East along 8th Avenue East to 8th Street East.  

Two bus stop locations will be temporarily relocated due to this construction. 

1. The bus stop near 611 9th Avenue East, the Superior Court of Justice: this bus stop is currently relocated to 625 8th Avenue East. 

2. The bus stop fronting 875 6th Street East (Lee Manor): this bus stop is currently relocated 25m westerly along the 6th Street East service Road, fronting 795 6th Street East.

Quick Facts: 

• Road closures will impact motorists and pedestrians at 9th Avenue East from Superior Street to 6th Street East from June to November 2025. 

• Motorists can expect delays along 9th Avenue East due to the impacted roadway going down to two lanes.  

• There will be three detour routes to accommodate the high traffic areas impacted by this project.  

• Project is part of the Ministry of Transportation Connecting Link Grant, with $2.7M going towards this work.
