Transit Study

About the Project

The City of Owen Sound undertook a Transit Optimization Review process in 2021 to assess the existing transit service delivery model and identify areas of improvement to optimize the current transit system. This study analyzed and evaluated the City’s existing fixed-route system, including route coverage, route ridership, schedule adherence, and infrastructure perspectives. This process also reviewed similar transit systems, bus stop locations and distances and populations serviced, identify local issues, and data collection and analysis to quantify and qualify system operating characteristics.

Study Outcome

Outcomes of this study will include potential service models, including, but not limited to:

Route model specific to the current and future needs of Owen Sound,
Service schedule,
Trips per day for each day of the week,
Bus fare/pass structure, costs, and discounts,
Fixed versus demand service (and a combination of both),
Ticket purchasing options,
Specifications of the types of buses suitable for Owen Sound,
Potential to align with adjacent municipalities in developing an integrated transit system,
Possible models to determine effective partnerships with high schools and colleges
Installation of transit infrastructure,
How best to meet the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) requirements,
Selection of bus stop locations considering existing and future infrastructure in Owen Sound,
Ridership growth plan, Ridership tracking, and reporting,
Performance Metrics

Schedule

The study commenced in Mid-May and Phase 1 will be completed by the end of September. If approved, the service procurement phase will be completed in October – December.
