Alpha Street Set to Re-Open on Monday, November 25, On Budget and Ahead of Schedule

The City of Owen Sound is excited to announce the completion of the Alpha Street Reconstruction Project, which will see the full reopening of Alpha Street on Monday, November 25, 2024.  Completed on budget and ahead of schedule, this significant $5.2 million capital project marks a major investment in the City’s infrastructure and quality of life for residents.

Bus stops, including Owen Sound Transit and school bus pick-up and drop-off locations, temporarily re-routed during the project, will return to their usual routes starting Monday, December 2, 2024.

This transformative project, made possible in part by funding from the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund (OCIF), was undertaken by Moorefield Excavating Ltd. of Harriston, Ontario.  The project included substantial improvements to utilities, accessibility, and safety, such as:

  • Upgraded underground infrastructure: the replacement and enhancement of watermain and sanitary sewer systems to support long-term reliability;
  • Improved road geometry: a smoother road surface and safer driving experience with better sightlines;
  • Active transportation route: a continuous three-metre-wide asphalt path for bicycles, mobility devices and pedestrians, complemented by multiple accessible rest areas;
  • Enhanced landscaping, including the planting of approximately 30 new trees;
  • Upgraded pedestrian crossings, including one equipped with flashing lights;
  • Modernized street lighting for improved visibility for pedestrians and vehicles alike.

The City extends its gratitude to residents for their patience and cooperation throughout the project.  To keep the community informed, updates were provided via a dedicated project webpage at OwenSound.ca/AlphaStreet, supplementing the initial project newsletter distributed to local households.
