Community Approach to Proper Sharps Disposal

Many communities face a challenge with the proper disposal of sharps in public places. With the arrival of warmer weather, more sharps and needles may be discovered, exposed by the melting snow. To address this issue, a community-based approach is required. The City of Owen Sound is reminding residents of how they can be a part of the solution to ensure proper disposal of sharps.

A sharps disposal bin is located in Municipal Parking Lot 5, between 2nd and 3rd Avenues East, and one is also located at Grey Bruce Public Health (101 17th St East).

If you find a sharp (such as a needle or syringe) or other drug paraphernalia in a public space, please contact Public Works at 519-376-4274 between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays.  You may prefer to submit a form through the City’s online Report A Concern portal and select ‘Sharps/Needles Improperly Discarded.’  This service is for public property only, such as parks, trails, and sidewalks.

It is the owner's responsibility to dispose of sharps items found on private property.  For the safest disposal procedures, see the recommendations from Grey Bruce Public Health’s website or the “Be Smart with Sharps” poster below.
