Downtown Excess Snow Removal Begins Tomorrow – 8th Street East Temporary Road Closure Tuesday Morning
Excess snow removal operations will begin in Owen Sound’s downtown River District area tomorrow, Tuesday, February 25, at 7 a.m. 8th Street East, between 2nd and 3rd Avenue East, will be closed Tuesday morning for these snow removal operations.
City staff will implement rolling road closures throughout the River District as they work block by block to remove excess snow and accumulated piles. This approach will improve safety and accessibility for vehicles and pedestrians while minimizing disruption to the entire downtown area.
The schedule for additional blocks in the River District is dependent on weather conditions and operational progress. The intended schedule for temporary road closures and snow removal includes:
- Tues. Feb. 25: 8th St E between 2nd Ave E and 3rd Ave E
- Wed. Feb. 26: 8th St E between 2nd Ave East and 1st Ave West
- Thurs. Feb. 27: 2nd Ave E between 9th St E and 10th St E
Updates will be provided as work continues through media releases and on the City’s website. Residents are encouraged to subscribe to news updates by clicking the blue ‘Subscribe’ button at OwenSound.ca/News. Road conditions and closures are always available on Municipal 511’s website.
This removal is above and beyond the usual winter maintenance of plowing streets and sidewalks. Snowbanks will be hauled to designated snow disposal sites where they can safely be stored and, later, melt without causing issues.
Vehicles parked in the affected areas must be removed by the posted times to allow snow removal equipment access to the accumulated snow piles. Residents and visitors are reminded that winter overnight parking restrictions are in place. Vehicles interfering with snow removal activities may be towed.
Signage will be posted indicating snow-clearing operations are ongoing in the areas affected. Drivers and pedestrians are asked to be aware of their surroundings when travelling in these areas.
Snow removal operations in the downtown area are an essential part of the City's efforts to keep the streets and sidewalks clear and passable for residents, as well as emergency vehicles.
