Downtown Excess Snow Removal Reminder!

Excess snow removal operations will begin in Owen Sound’s downtown River District area tomorrow, Wednesday, January 15, at 8 p.m.  The work is expected to be completed by early Thursday morning.

City staff will remove excess snow and accumulated piles to improve safety and accessibility for vehicles and pedestrians.  This removal is above and beyond the usual winter maintenance of plowing streets and sidewalks.  Snowbanks will be hauled to designated snow disposal sites where they can safely be stored and, later, melt without causing issues.

Vehicles parked in the downtown core must be removed from parking spaces by 8 p.m. on Wednesday, January 15, to allow snow removal equipment access to the accumulated snow piles. Residents and visitors are reminded that winter overnight parking restrictions are in place. Vehicles interfering with snow removal activities will be towed.

The areas impacted include the following streets, or sections of streets, in the downtown River District area:

·       2nd Avenue East, between 6th Street East and 11th Street East

·       3rd Avenue East, between 8th Street East and 10th Street East

·       4th Avenue East, between 8th Street East and 10th Street East

·       10th Street East, between 1st Avenue West and 4th Avenue East

·       9th Street East, between 1st Avenue West and 4th Avenue East

·       8th Street East, between 1st Avenue West and 4th Avenue East

·       1st Avenue East, between 8th Street East and 9th Street East

·       1st Avenue West, between 8th Street West and 10th Street West

City staff will be posting signage indicating snow-clearing operations are ongoing.  Drivers and pedestrians are asked to be aware of their surroundings when travelling in these areas.

Snow removal operations in the downtown area are an essential part of the City’s efforts to keep the streets and sidewalks clear and passable for residents, as well as emergency vehicles.
