Fire Hydrant Flow Testing Underway Throughout City

The City of Owen Sound is conducting fire hydrant flow testing throughout the city this week. This important work helps assess water pressure levels at fire hydrants across the City’s water distribution system.

During testing, residents may notice temporary changes in water pressure or slight discolouration in tap water. This is a normal part of the process. Despite these temporary effects, City water remains safe to drink.

If discolouration occurs, running a cold water tap for 5 to 30 minutes typically clears the water. It is recommended to avoid using hot water until the cold runs clear.  If the issue persists, residents are encouraged to contact the City Water Department at 519-376-4274.

Testing will take place throughout the city and may impact several areas at once. The Public’s patience and understanding are much appreciated as this necessary maintenance is completed.

For more information, please contact Bryce McDonald, Manager of Water and Wastewater, at 519-376-1440 ext. 3224 or email bmcdonald@owensound.ca.

Quick Facts:

  • The City of Owen Sound Water system has approximately 675 fire hydrants.
  • The fire hydrants have coloured reflective rings that indicate available fire flow. Red is the lowest fire flow, and blue is the highest fire flow.
