Fire in Local Grocery Store Extinguished  

Owen Sound Fire and Emergency Services responded to a report of a fire with black smoke visible at an east side grocery store earlier today.  The fire was in the deli area and was controlled by the fixed extinguishing system, building ventilation system and portable fire extinguishers prior to fire department arrival. 

11 fire department staff responded to the building. No injuries to occupants, staff or firefighters are reported. The building was evacuated and was closed for nearly one hour while fire crews were on scene. 

No estimate of damage is available.

  • All commercial kitchens that produce grease laden vapours must have a fixed extinguishing system and ventilation system. 

  • Stay in the kitchen while cooking to prevent fires. 

  • Ensure the cooking areas are kept clean and clear of combustibles.
