Flags at City Facilities Half-Masted in Honour of National Day of Mourning
Marked annually in Canada on April 28, the City of Owen Sound recognizes the National Day of Mourning to remember and honour those lives lost or injured due to a workplace tragedy. In honour of this day, flags at all City facilities (excluding City Hall’s community flagpole) are currently lowered to half-mast until the end of the day.
The National Day of Mourning was proclaimed by the Canadian government in 1991 and has since spread to more than 100 countries worldwide.
According to the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, the annual observance of this day hopes to strengthen the resolve to establish safe and healthy conditions in the workplace and prevent further injuries, illnesses, and deaths. As much as this is a day to remember those who have lost their lives, it is also a call to protect the living and make work a place where people are safe and can thrive.
