Free Junior Firefighter Program Returns in May

Owen Sound Fire and Emergency Services is continuing the junior firefighter program once again this May! The program will be open to students in grades five or six at Owen Sound schools. Fire Department staff will be visiting students in these grades today with a registration package.

The free program, made possible by a donation from Georgian Bay Fire and Safety, will run for five consecutive Thursday evenings beginning May 2 through May 30 from 6 -7:30 p.m. at the Owen Sound Fire and Emergency Services Headquarters Station.  Participants will be in four crews learning fire prevention, suppression, auto extrication, first aid basics and many more skills.

Early registration is encouraged as space is limited. Students can register through the packages received at their schools, or by contacting Fire Prevention Officer Greg Nicol.

Quick Facts:

• Students in grades five and six are encouraged to get their applications in quickly.
• If you sleep with your bedroom door closed, you should install a smoke alarm in the room for early warning.
• Carbon monoxide alarms are required on the levels where you sleep in your house. You may require more than one carbon monoxide alarm.
