Help Keep Hydrants Clear and Accessible in Owen Sound

The City of Owen Sound Water Division is clearing hydrants of excess snow following recent heavy snowfalls, ensuring they remain accessible for emergency services.

Fast access to a fire hydrant can help save lives and properties.  The City periodically clears the snow around the hydrants, but residents can do their part, too!  Keeping clear, unobstructed access to the hydrants' ports ensures precious seconds aren’t wasted clearing snow in the event of an emergency.

If there is a fire hydrant near your home, please consider helping to keep it clear of snow or other obstructions between City maintenance runs.  This will ensure that if you or a neighbour needs it, the hydrant is clearly visible, unobstructed and ready to use.

Quick Facts:

  • The City of Owen Sound Water system has approximately 675 fire hydrants.
  • The fire hydrants have coloured reflective rings that indicate available fire flow. Red has the lowest fire flow, and blue is capable of the highest fire flow.
  • Hydrants are marked with reflective flags in winter months to help find them in case they become buried in snow.
