Initial Demolition Work Set to Commence at Former Courthouse and Jail
The proposed redevelopment of the former Owen Sound Courthouse and Jail is moving forward with some demolitions and removals of the non-heritage buildings and structures in preparation for its future adaptive reuse as an event venue. The Site Plan Approval process is currently underway.
Demolition of the following buildings and structures is set to start this year at the former ‘Jail Site’. The following (non-designated) structures will be demolished.
- Single-story attached garage to the north (side) of the Governor’s Residence.
- Miscellaneous accessory buildings and structures including fire escapes, exterior stairwells, and accessory buildings within the southern Jail yard and to the rear of the Governor’s Residence.
- Non-original additions to the north and south side of the 1854 Jail.
- Minor interior nonstructural partitions.
The Jail portion of the site is listed on the City’s Heritage Register.

Quick Facts:
- The entertainment and event venue is intended to accommodate gatherings for specific events (e.g., weddings, business and personal events, etc.) and will be supported by on-site restaurants, drinking establishments, indoor and outdoor entertainment facilities, including an outdoor patio, and overnight accommodations. These uses will be available to both event participants and the general public.
- The development will include an off-site parking area located at 1399 2nd Ave East.
