Structure Fire Extinguished: Reminder to Practice Fire Safety

On Sunday, August 25, 2024 at approximately 12:30PM, Owen Sound Fire and Emergency Services responded to a report of a structure fire with heavy smoke coming from a 2nd floor window in the 1000 block of 6th Ave W.

On arrival, crews found a two-storey single family dwelling with smoke showing. Fire crews conducted an internal attack and searched the home. Fire was quickly extinguished and damage was limited to a small area in the basement around the clothes dryer.  The rest of the home was saved and suffered only minor smoke damage.  Damage is estimated to be less than $10,000.

Owen Sound Fire and Emergency Services would like to remind everyone to have working smoke alarms in their homes, apartments or condos. Have an escape plan, practice it, and be prepared to use it in the event of a fire.

Cause of fire is due to a clothes dryer malfunction.  No injuries occurred as a result of the fire.  Residents are reminded to clean your lint trap and dryer vents regularly.
